Why is an IP address shown in the wrong country?

Updated 3 October 2026

IP geolocation shows where a network is registered and routed, which is usually, but not always, where the person is. Common reasons for a mismatch:

  • VPNs and proxies: the visitor appears in the country of the server they connect through. Check the is_vpn and is_proxy fields.
  • Mobile networks: some carriers route traffic through gateways in another region or country.
  • Company networks: corporate traffic may leave the network from head office in another country.
  • Recently moved IP ranges: addresses that changed owner recently can take a short time to update. Our data refreshes daily.

If you believe a result is wrong, open a support ticket with the IP address and the expected country.
